On September 1, 1850, forty-thousand people descended on the New York City Harbor to welcome singer Jenny Lind at the start of her American tour. This is the surprising story of how P. T. Barnum’s efforts in the preceding months transformed the Swedish Nightingale into America's Swedish Nightingale, and the surprising in uence of promotion on cultural history.
